GATES, HILLMAN, STILLS CITED AS OCTOBER STARS
15 pro, amateur and high school athletes honored by the San Diego Hall of Champions

SAN DIEGO—(Nov. 4, 2014)—Hall of Fame receiver Lance Alworth told UT San Diego that if anyone were to break his San Diego Chargers career yardage record, he would be pleased if it were Antonio Gates. It was as Gates surpassed Alworth, earning October Breitbard Star of the Month honors as selected by the San Diego Hall of Champions.

He was joined in the professional ranks by former San Diego State standout running back Ronnie Hillman and ex-La Costa Canyon High wide receiver Kenny Stills.

Gates passed Alworth in the Kansas City game and by the end of the month had pushed his career yardage to 9,610—topping the 9,584 by Alworth, a 1972 Breitbard Hall of Famer who was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1978.

Hillman has cemented his position at running back with the Denver Broncos and in four games he gained 347 yards and has a pair of scores. He had 100-yard games against the Chargers and Jets. Stills is one of the go-to players for the New Orleans Saints, grabbing 15 passes for 248 yards in four games.

On the amateur front, SDSU linebacker Calvin Munson and USD running back Jonah Hodges stood out.  Hodges set a single-game rushing record with 273 yards in a 31-23 victory over Stetson, including TD runs of 53 and 56 yards. Munson led the Aztec defense with 27 tackles in October.

Joining those two were soccer players Katie Perry of SDSU (four goals) and Ariel Oriarte of Point Loma Nazarene (one goal allowed in eight games), UCSD’s high-scoring water polo player Josh Stiling (24 goals), and USD volleyball standout Alaysia Brown (112 kills).

Record-setting volleyball setter Annie Hasselmann of La Jolla Country Day, football standouts Dechaun Holiday of Mission Hills and Frank Buncom IV of St. Augustine, girls golfer Haley Moore of San Pasqual, tennis ace Kelsey Chen of Torrey Pines and cross country runner Trevor Siniscalchi topped the list of high school honorees.
