Sports at Lunch, Dick Enberg and his play, "McGuire"
Bill Walton's tribute to Al McGuire and Dick Enberg's one-man play
Dick Enberg, the Emmy Award-winning broadcaster and long-time friend of the Hall of Champions, spoke at Sports at Lunch on his one-man play, "McGuire," on Aug. 13 at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park.
Scott Kaplan of XX Sports Radio served as the moderator and walked Enberg through the play with questions.
Enberg wrote the play about his friend and broadcast partner, Al McGuire, who died of leukemia in 2001. The retired Marquette coach won an NCAA title in 1977 and joined Enberg and Billy Packer on college basketball broadcasts in 1978. McGuire was a character that mixed his wit and Brooklyn street smarts to bring a unique perspective and banter to the threesome's broadcasts.
Enberg, now with CBS, has won 14 Emmys, with seven for writing. He wrote the one-man play as a tribute to his old friend, and critics have said his work has brought McGuire "back to life."
"McGuire," with Cotter Smith playing Al McGuire, played before two sellout audiences at the North Coast Repertory Theater in April. There will be three more performances, with a 7:30 p.m. show on Aug. 18 and a 6:30 and a 9 p.m. show on Aug. 19.
