SAN DIEGO—(July 1, 2015)—Baseball and track and field topped the list of sports in which nine local athletes were honored as Stars of the Month by the San Diego Hall of Champions.
San Diego Padres pitcher Brandon Maurer helped keep his team in contention in the National League West as he went 4-0 with a 1.23 ERA, allowing just nine hits and two earned runs in 14.2 innings.
San Diego State grad Ashley Whitley stepped up in the USA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, and earned a trip to Beijing, China, for the World Championships. Whitley tossed the discus 204-feet-1 to finish second overall.
Former Fallbrook High ace Mike Leake had a strong month of June for the Cincinnati Reds, going 3-0 as opponents batted just .179 against the right-hander. He allowed only 16 earned runs in five starts while fanning 31 batters.
Kris Bryant, the 2013 first-round draft pick out of USD, continues to impress at all levels as he batted a solid .263 in June with three home runs and 11 RBI while playing third base for the Chicago Cubs.
On the amateur front, USD’s Megan Goodman qualified for the World Championships of rowing in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, July 22-26; Cal State San Marcos’ Dylan Healey won the 100th Southwestern Amateur in Scottsdale; Oceanside High’s Charles Lenford captured the state title in the discus throw; Destiny Littleton of Bishop’s played on the U-16 USA Women’s Basketball team that finished third and SDSU’s Malik Pope gained valuable experience as a finalist for the USA U-19 World Championship basketball team.
