Inducted in 1973, Ray “Ike” Boone was a slugging infielder in the major leagues from 1948 to 1960.
Initially a shortstop with the Cleveland Indians, he was a rookie pinch hitter in the 1948 World Series against the Bolston Braves. Traded to Detroit in 1953, he became a two time All-Star third baseman with the Tigers in 1954 and again in 1956. He equaled an American League record in 1953 with four grand slams, and in 1955 he tied for the league lead in RBI with 116.
A Hoover High School graduate and long time scout for the Boston Red Sox, he is patriarch of the first three-generation major league family. His son, Bob, and grandsons Bret and Aaron all became big leaguers.
