Hobbs Adams

Football, Inducted 1994

A football, baseball, basketball and track star at San Diego High (Class of 1922), he then went to USC, where he captained Howard jones’ first team in 1925. He coached at Monrovia High from 1926-28 and then returned to San Diego High as Cavers head football coach from 1929-35.

Turning down a head coaching offer from San Diego State, he became USC’s freshman football coach and worked under the legendary Howard Jones until ‘39, when he left to run the Kansas State program. He returned to KSU after the war, but quickly left coaching and took a position as Rawlings’ West Coast representative, a job he held until he retired in 1967.

Adams played some pro ball for the Hollywood Generals and in 1927 played against Chicago Bears’ Grange and the Duluth Eskimos’ Nevers, whom he also new from Nevers’ Stanford days. Adams played with Morley Drury, Mort Kaer, Leo Calland and Brice Taylor at USC. At SDHS, he coached Warburton and Amby Schindler, later stars for Jones’ Trojans. Coaching the Jacksonville Navy team during World War II, he tutored Hall of Famer George McAfee, a part of the Bears’ famed 73-0 championship rout of Washington in 1940
