Inducted in 1994. Willie Buchanon starred as a receiver at Oceanside High School and Mira Costa College, and then became an outstanding cornerback for San Diego State and the Green Bay Packers and the San Diego Chargers in the NFL.
A first round draft pick of the Packers, he was the NFL’s defensive Rookie of the Year in 1972 and a Pro Bowl selection in 1974 and 1978.
On September 24th, 1978, he intercepted four passes against the Chargers, running one back for a touchdown. The next week, his old Aztecs coach, Don Coryell, became head coach of the Chargers. He traded for Buchanon, and San Diego went to the playoffs the four seasons (1979-1982) Willie played for his hometown pro team.
