AUGUST STARS OF THE MONTH

Baseball Players Dominate August Stars of the Month
Padres’ relief specialist Nick Vincent tops honorees selected by the San Diego Hall of Champions

SAN DIEGO—(August 2, 2014)—Nick Vincent, the San Diego Padres’ middle-relief pitcher, has certainly found his niche.

Vincent, a graduate of Ramona High and Palomar College, was one of six athletes recognized as Stars of the Month for August by the San Diego Hall of Champions.

Quite simply, Vincent was perfect in 14 appearances covering 12.2 innings. He allowed zero runs—earned or unearned—for a perfect 0.00 ERA, yielding just two walks while striking at 14. The seven hits he allowed resulted in an anemic .163 opponents’ batting average. He went 1-0, collecting a win against the Colorado Rockies.

Joining Vincent were former Eastlake High standout Adrian Gonzalez, who helped the Dodgers assume the lead in the National League West, and ex-Rancho Bernardo player Wynton Bernard, who was selected the Most Valuable Player of the Midwest League while playing for the West Michigan Whitecaps.

On the amateur front, San Diego State’s Gunn Yang became the first area golfer to win the U.S. Amateur title since Phil Mickelson when he captured the match play title. Also selected for the month were baseball standouts Drew Finley of Rancho Bernardo High, the winning pitcher in The Perfect Game, and UCSD’s Troy Cruz, who helped the Santa Barbara Foresters to the National Baseball Congress World Series title.
