Trio top 14 pros, amateurs, preps honored by the San Diego Hall of Champions

With Chris Toth in goal, the San Diego Sockers enjoyed another successful season, earning Toth Star of the Month honors for February as chosen by the San Diego Hall of Champions.

Toth, who led the team to a 12-3 record and had a .735 save percentage, was joined by ex-La Jolla Country Day standout Candice Wiggins as professional Stars of the Month.

Wiggins is having another stellar WNBA season, averaging 10.1 points a game for the Tulsa Shock, including a 25-point game in a win over New York.

On the amateur front, San Diego State’s ultra-valuable sixth man, Dwayne Polee, and UCLA starting point guard Norman Powell, top the list of six locals honored.

Polee’s three-point field goal lifted the Aztecs past Boise State on the road while Powell, who is averaging 11.3 points a game, tossed in 21 in a key win over rival USC.

UCSD’s record-setting water polo player Sarah Lizotte, SDSU softball standout Patrice Jackson, Cal State San Marcos softball player Melyssa Bellamy and UCSD swimmer Paul Li, who set a pair of school records, were also cited.

Basketball players dominated the list of a half-dozen high school athletes selected Stars of the Month.

Foothills Christian’s T.J. Leaf, Mater Dei Catholic’s Kandiss Barber, Torrey Pines’ Sierra Campisano and Horizon Christian’s Sarah Porter stood out on the court while Brawley’s Vincent Elizalde was unbeaten in wrestling and Cathedral Catholic’s Olivia Erlbeck dominated in soccer.
