MEB, DENORFIA, McMILLIN HONORED AS STARS OF MONTH
Pros, Amateurs, Preps top list of 15 recognized by the San Diego Hall of Champions
SAN DIEGO—(May 2, 2014)—It isn’t every day an American wins the Boston Marathon. In fact, the drought had reached 31 years before San Diego High graduate Meb Keflezighi broke the tape, topping the list of 16 Stars of Month for April as selected by the San Diego Hall of Champions.
Meb won the emotional Boston Marathon, crossing the finish line after 26.2 miles in 2-hours, 9-minutes, 13 seconds. Coached by Breitbard Hall of Famer Bob Larsen, Meb broke away early to make sure there would be no late heroics.
Other professionals to be honored include San Diego Padres outfielder Chris Denorfia and off-road champion Andy McMillin. Denorfia batted .314 for the month and led the team with 9 RBI. McMillin won the SCORE Imperial Valley 250 off-road race.
On the amateur front, baseball players Troy Cruz of UCSD and Terrence Buchanan of Cal State San Marcos led a list of seven honorees. Others included USD golfer Grant Forrest and tennis player Clarke Spinosa, Point Loma Nazarene track standout Soliaana Faapouli, SDSU tennis player Laura Antonana Iriarte and water polo player Iolo Benekou.
High school athletes honored included section record-setting track athlete Hannah Labrie-Smith and baseball pitcher Brady Aiken of Cathedral Catholic, La Costa Canyon distance runner Steven Fahy and volleyball setter Kekoa Pukahi, Poway softball pitcher Kourtney Shaw and Rancho Bernardo catcher Alex Jackson.
