LEONARD, HUGHES TOP LIST OF STARS OF THE MONTH
Pros, Amateurs, Preps top list of 15 recognized by the San Diego Hall of Champions

SAN DIEGO—(Jan. 3, 2015)—Former San Diego State basketball All-American Kawhi Leonard and San Diego Sockers standout Jeff Hughes topped the list of 15 athletes honored as Stars of the Month for January by the San Diego Hall of Champions.

Leonard, coming off an injury, made an immediate impact for San Antonio, averaging 15.3 points a game as the Spurs regained their momentum to go 6-2.  His high game was a 24-point performance against the Los Angeles Clippers.

The veteran Hughes showed some of the moves that made him the league MVP in 2009-10 as he scored 17 points in six games—each of them a Sockers win—in the Major Arena Soccer League.

On the amateur front, former La Jolla Country Day standout Kelsey Plum showed she has lost none of her competitiveness as she averaged better than 20 points a game for the Washington Huskies.  Her season average of 24.1 is third in the nation.

Joining her were basketball standouts Christopher Anderson of USD and Winston Shepard of SDSU, CSUSM hoopsters Julian Camper and Cassie Damyanovich and UCSD sophomore guard Adam Klie.  Another Triton, Austine Lee, was honored for her performances in swimming.

Unbeaten wrestler Colt Doyle of Poway and soccer standout Roman Martin of La Jolla Country Day topped the list of six high school honorees. Joining Doyle and Martin were basketball players DiJonai Carrington of Horizon, Sierra Campisano of Torrey Pines, Brandon McCoy of Morse and Johnny McWilliams of San Marcos.
