SAN DIEGO—(April 2, 2015)—Three San Diego area standouts top the list of Stars of the Month for March as selected by the San Diego Hall of Champions.
Kawhi Leonard of the San Antonio Spurs, Kraig Chiles of the San Diego Sockers and Normal Powell of UCLA headline the list of professional, amateur and high school standouts.
Leonard, an All-American basketball player at San Diego State, returned from an injury to help the struggling Spurs qualify to defend their NBA title by making the post-season championship. He averaged 19.3 points and 7.3 rebounds game.
Chiles switched uniforms, donning the national colors, to lead Team U.S.A. to the first WMF World Cup championship with a 5-3 victory over Mexico. Chiles, a Poway High and SDSU grad, led all scorers in six indoor games with 10 goals and 18 points.
Powell, a senior at UCLA who led Lincoln High to a state high school title, got the Bruins into the Sweet 16 by averaging 16.4 points a game on the season and 17.2 in PAC-12 play.
He was one of seven amateur stars including SDSU basketball player J.J. O’Brien and softball ace Lorena Bauer, USD pitchers David Hill (baseball) and Paige Von Sprecken (softball), Cal State San Marcos women’s basketball standout Heather Thompson and UCSD baseball stalwart Troy Cruz.
On the high school front, state wrestling champion Ralphy Tovar and La Jolla Country Day state basketball champion team member Mai-Loni Henson were joined by Rancho Bernardo pitcher Drew Finley, Chula Vista soccer forward Isai Aguila, Cathedral Catholic girls all-around soccer player Jessica Clegg and Rancho Buena Vista softball sensation Falepolima Aviu.
