SAN DIEGO—(June 2, 2016)—Pitching was dominant as 15 standouts were honored as Stars of the Month for May by the San Diego Hall of Champions.
San Diego Padres ace Drew Pomeranz, former San Diego State standout Stephen Strasburg and ex-Rancho Bernardo lefty Cole Hamels were in the spotlight for their dominant performances.
Pomeranz posted a 2.25 ERA, allowing just 18 hits and 9 runs. Opposing batters had little luck, batting just .145 against him as he fanned 38 while walking 17.
Strasburg was even better as he improved his record to a perfect 9-0 for the Washington Nationals with a 2.69 ERA, striking out 90 while allowing just 22 walks. Hamels moved to 5-1 for the Texas Rangers, posting a 3.34 ERA with 67 strikeouts.
On the amateur front, San Diego State golfer Nahum Mendoza III, out of Francis Parker High, led the Aztecs into the NCAA Tournament and finished 26th overall after a sizzling first round of 67.
Joining him were UCSD track standouts Paige Hughes, Dan Golubovic and Frederik Jahr, USD tennis All-American Uros Petronijevic and SDSU women’s water polo goalie Rachel Mitchell.
San Diego Section champions Keegan Smith of Point Loma (tennis), Kaiwen Liu of Torrey Pines (golf), Rashid Shaheed of Mt. Carmel (track) and Tessa Anderson of West Hills (gymnastics) were joined by San Marcos’ softball pitching ace Payton Tidd and Hoover High’s slugging infielder Lewis Butler as high school Stars of the Month.
