SAN DIEGO—(Nov. 3, 2016)—San Diego Chargers running back Melvin Gordon, NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson and ex-USD All-American baseball player Kris Bryant were among 15 athletes selected Stars of the Month for October by the San Diego Hall of Champions.
Gordon, in his second year with the Chargers, gained 378 yards, including 111 against Denver, scoring four times. He also caught 17 passes for 158 yards and two more touchdowns in four games.
Johnson, a Granite Hills High alumnus, had bookend victories, opening the month with a win at Charlotte and finishing with a victory at Martinsville in his quest for a record-tying seventh Sprint Series title.
Bryant starred as the Chicago Cubs’ third baseman, leading his team into the World Series for the first time since 1945. He batted .262 in the post-season with two homers and seven RBI with five doubles.
San Diego State kicker John Baron was one of six amateur athletes honored after going 8-for-8 on field goals and 15-of-15 on extra points.
Joining him were Aztec soccer player Victoria Barba, USD running back Jonah Hodges, UCSD soccer duo of Meghan Berry and Cameron McElfresh, and Point Loma Nazarene University soccer player Nico Tagaloa.
On the high school front, Helix linebacker Ezekiel Noa, Rancho Bernardo golfer Calista Reyes, Madison quarterback Terrell Carter, La Costa Canyon girls cross country standout Kristin Fahy, Cathedral Catholic linebacker Moroni Anae and record-setting Escondido volleyball player Angie Docena were recognized for their achievements.
