SAN DIEGO—(May 2, 2016)—Charley Hoffman birdied the final hole to capture the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio and tops the list of local professional, amateur and high school athletes honored as Stars of the Month for April by the San Diego Hall of Champions.
Hoffman finished with a 3-under 69 and his birdie on 18 allowed the Poway High alumnus to win the tournament by a single stroke with a 12-under par 276. It was his fourth career PGA title.
Joining him in the professional ranks was San Diego Padres first baseman Wil Myers, who batted .302 for the month with five home runs and 13 RBI; Rancho Santa Fe’s Coco Vandeweghe, who helped lift the U.S. to victory over Australia in Fed Cup tennis play; and former USD and Grossmont High pitcher A.J. Griffin who was 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA for the Texas Rangers.
Two SDSU athletes, golfer Nahum Mendoza III and sprinter Ashley Henderson; a pair of USD athletes, track standout Sam Mattice and unbeaten single tennis player Jordan Angus; two UCSD standouts, softball player Kelsi Maday and water polo attacker Laurel Kistler, and track record-setter Marissa Bartello of Point Loma Nazarene University in the steeplechase at 10:46.24 topped the amateur field.
High school athletes in the spotlight included San Ysidro catcher Conrado Diaz for baseball, Cathedral Catholic softball pitcher Devyn Magnett, Francis Parker’s Reece Salmons in volleyball, Rancho Bernardo sprinter Jackie Patterson, Bishop’s softball player Livy Schiele and Oceanside’s discus-shot put standout Charles Lenford.
